myWorld offers advanced search features

Simple, Smart, Fast

myWorld search has been a key feature of the product since the very first prototype launched back in 2010. It follows the myWorld mantra of “simple, smart, fast”. Simply begin to type what you are looking for, such as a pole or valve number or an address, and an autocomplete list updates dynamically as you type. This will happen no matter where the data is stored, whether it is asset data stored in the myWorld database or an address in Google.

Intuitive Complex Search

For more complex queries you can type in the name of a feature, like “pole”, and the autocomplete suggests queries that you can run, such as “pole in window” or “pole in selection”. Traditional GIS products often have rather laborious and complex query tools - myWorld search aims to provide much of the same capability but in a much more intuitive way.

Integrating External Data Sources

Over the last few releases we have made a number of enhancements to our search capabilities. The most significant is the ability to search against additional external services, apart from Google, which has been included since the beginning.

We have a very powerful “external datasource" framework which lets us connect to many different data sources and provide similar functionality across all of them, including map display, feature selection, search and query. Supported sources include:

  • Esri REST API, which gives us access to any ArcGIS Server or ArcGIS Online data
  • OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) WMS (Web Map Service) and WFS (Web Feature Service) standards, which are supported by all major geospatial vendors.

So a myWorld user can select a polygon in any supported source, and in search ask for features inside that selection, which can come from any other source. The fact that features may be coming from different servers in different formats is completely transparent to the user.

What’s Next?

There is plenty more that we want to add to search in the future, including ways of combining structured and unstructured search terms in a simple way, inspired by the way that gmail search works. So watch this space!
